In February of 2024, I was between jobs and figuring out my next steps. I sat back and thought about what industry I wanted to be in. What industry I thought could use innovation, affect the future on a global sense, and that I would be proud to have changed when my young son grew up.
And I realized it was the industry I had just left.
E-Mobility.
On March 21st, an old friend reached out. We had worked as R&D Project Manager (me) and R&D Engineering Manager (him) between 2017 and 2018. I pushed innovation, he led solid delivery in manufacturing. Hundreds of businesses were relying on the quality and functionality of the products he had designed and helped build. I remembered working hard, innovating well, and resolving disagreements with a level of respect and laughter that made the job one I missed. He was reaching out because he had left his position of Engineering Manager at a company, and wanted to change the world of E-bikes.
A call ensued.
We had lunch an hour later.
I had my Co-Founder.
We defined the business. What we wanted to accomplish. What we wanted to make sure we never did. These aren't one-time customers, we want a relationship defined by respect, quality, and a desire to really serve the Rider.
The product coalesced. We flew to Eurobike 2024, walking the entire trade show in 3 days, talking with Brands, and seeing where the industry was going. It helped us setup for our Minimal Viable Product (MVP) and Product Market Fit (PMF).
In September, we were accepted to the (Waterloo) Accelerator Centre. We had the business and our 60 years of knowledge. But now we could tap 250 years of experience in everything we needed help. We instantly had 10 more "Co-Founders" - people who had delivered in startups who could help us succeed in ours.
We began to work with IP-Ontario (IPON), creating the legal framework to protect our innovations, as well as work to understand what others were doing and how we could fit into the e-mobility sector.
Going to Micro-mobility US let us once again meet with people working to supply the E-Mobility sector with new and fantastic ways to ride. We met our first amazing customer, and started a Beta shortly after.
In December, we started to work on the design of the actual controller, as we also worked with our Customer to show what is possible.
Progress on the controller continues, with supplier relationships being strengthened, evaluation parts being brought in and tested.
Eurobike 2025, HERE WE COME!
We're excited to be presenting at the Eurobike 2025 Startup Conference, meeting people and teams that will define the way people ride for the next decade. It's scary, but we have something real to show to the world.
Sprightly is not just building a controller — we’re redefining what’s possible in light electric mobility.
Our next-generation controller hardware is in advanced development, engineered for reliability, performance, and intelligence. It’s more than robust — it’s built with innovation at its core, and it reflects the kind of innovation and inventiveness that gives our partners a serious edge. Jim and I are harnessing our decades of creating our own patents and improving what we do... to improve micro-mobility. We’re solving problems others haven’t dared to tackle.
Our firmware is a source of continuous improvement, leveraging the market that continues to deliver the next generation of mobility. It's not a static space with firmware that's been on the shelf for a decade. More than just low-level control code — we’re creating the backbone of a smarter, more connected ride. Every line of code we ship is designed to add value, unlock new features, and future-proof our platform.
Our mobile app is in progress and designed to feel as polished and reliable as the bike itself — with intuitive control, real-time insights, and powerful tools for diagnostics, performance tuning, and fleet management. It’s a command centre in your pocket.
Meanwhile, our AI engine is already operational — learning, analyzing, and delivering actionable insights from real-world data. It’s an intelligent layer that makes our platform more than a product: it’s a system that evolves.
And here’s the best part: we’re not alone. We have customers giving feedback, and helping us refine every piece of the stack. We’re in active talks with strategic partners to scale manufacturing, distribution, and deployment.
We’re building what others wish they had — and we’re just getting started.
